February 28, 2025
With my naturally anxious disposition and avoidant personality, even routine tasks like going to the dentist can be challenging. I first heard about MyDental Manor at one of the Manor Chamber of Commerce meetings, so I took their flyer and attached it to my fridge. There it hung, taunting me and reminding me of my inability to be an adult who is proactive about her healthcare. I’ve been promising my mother for at least 20 years that I would work on being a grown-up, so sometimes I have to give myself ultimatums: grow up or you will be disowned. At the beginning of 2025, I set a goal: “See the dentist within two months or bad things will happen to you.” I am happy to report that I met this goal on the last day of February 2025. The front desk staff were courteous and immediately checked me in. Jasmine, my dental assistant, was very knowledgeable and kind, and she seemed to pick up on my anxiety – probably because it oozes from every pore of my body. Not wanting to make her feel uncomfortable, I explained, while gesturing at the tools, lights, and monitors, that it wasn’t the equipment that made me anxious but the outcome of the visit. You see, if you delay a trip to the dentist for several years, you won’t hear about cavities or poor dental health that require attention. The same goes for a physical exam, a vision appointment, or a pregnancy test. Jasmine first took X-rays of my mouth, carefully ensuring the best imaging possible. Then she escorted me to a clean and organized exam room, where Dr. Patel took over. Dr. Patel was very thorough, asking about my oral history and my concerns and goals. My goal is simple: keep these teeth for as long as possible. I was then given a cleaning, a fluoride treatment, and a comprehensive plan outlining the next steps for my oral care. I did not necessarily ace the exam, but I received clear instructions on how to move toward better oral health. We are only given so many teeth, and a healthy mouth is more than just fresh breath; bacteria resulting from poor gum health can contribute to serious conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and even Alzheimer’s. So if you are anxious and avoidant like me and have been stalling on seeing a dentist (or any other healthcare professional, for that matter), please do your mouth and body a favor by making an appointment at MyDental Manor. I promise you will survive – you’ll be in great hands, encounter a clinic full of friendly, caring faces, and do future you a kindness. You are worth that and more.
